King Crimson "Volkhaus(Siréne-152)" tour of Europe in the spring of 1973

King Crimson’s tour of Europe in the spring of 1973 was very short, lasting just over a week. It began on March 30th in Hanover and ended April 9th in Paris and is one of the better documented of their career. The tape for the Zürich show on April 8th surfaced on the internet earlier this year. There are two cdr releases, Zurich ,Volkhaus 1973,4.8 and Swiss Made on Blue Cafe. The sound quality is very good and clear with no distortion or balance issues. It is slightly distant from the stage and there is a small venue feel making the range a bit narrow.

After looking at past reviews on the CMR site one can easily determine that the majority of the reviews focus on the creative mid seventies and the line up of Bill Bruford on drums, Jamie Muir on percussion , John Wetton on bass and vocals, David Cross on violin and keyboards, and Robert Fripp on guitar. The line up released the incredible Larks Tongues in Aspic record in late 1972 and toured incessantly to promote the new work. The band’s new line up was a superb departure from the earlier Crimson sound and the music produced during this time would go on to influence a new breed on progressive music, known as progressive metal (one can easily trace King Crimson > Rush > Tool > Mastodon).

Fácil: el mejor álbum de King Crimson en toda su historia. Han pasado más de veinticinco años y el disco sigue ahí. Nosotros llegamos a él muy tarde, y tras haber pasado por la mayoría de sus canciones a través de la primera antología Young Persons’ Guide. Así que este disco nunca nos ha parecido lo que piensan los demás, porque dejó de impactarnos globalmente, al hacerlo canción por canción.

“Lark´s tongues in aspic”,supone el comienzo discográfico de una de las encarnaciones más veneradas por fans tanto crimsonianos como progresivos en general. Grabado en los estudios Command entre los meses de enero y febrero de 1973, el disco supone muchas cosas para el futuro de la banda. Por un lado está el cambio total  de personal a excepción de Fripp, frente a los Burrell, Collins, Wallace, Sinfield nos encontramos ahora con un Bill Bruford recién llegado de las grabaciones del magistral “Close to the edge” del grupo Yes a la batería, Jamie Muir a las percusiones, David Cross al violín, viola y mellotron y John Wetton como cantante y bajista.
