King Crimson "Earthbound" "U.S.A"

The song Peoria:  Recorded at the Barn,Peoria,IL,U.S.A. 10/03/72

Don't make no difference what you think about me
But it makes a whole lot of difference what I think about you, yeah
Once unavailable, this low-fi live album deserves its legendary status. The range of styles is extraordinary. The version of 21st Century Schizoid Man is the best so far recorded, IMO - a scorcher where Boz Burrell rips off the vocal and the other band members are equally good. Funky isn't a word usually associated with KC, but Peoria delivers, showcasing especially Mel Collins' brilliant sax. Groon is another standout: if you can tolerate the meandering VCS section, the sustained, hypnotic shriek of Fripp's guitar, the still focus of an explosive, disintegrating finish, is worth the wait. What these guys could achieve improvising is just jaw-dropping: witness Earthbound itself, which begins with the words, "Start something up." A must-have if you like this version of the ever-changing KC lineup - each one quite distinctive - along with Live at the Summit Studios.
