Siempre será imposible saber cómo hubiéramos respondido ante este disco cuando se publicó originariamente en 1969: qué hubiéramos pensado al encontrar esta portada en la tienda, oír por primera vez el disco entero (Schizoid Man y después todo lo demás...), compararlo con lo que se publicaba entonces... Imposible. Por ello, nuestras reacciones ante este disco nunca podrán ser “originales”. Lástima. [No descubrimos King Crimson por Schizoid Man, ni por esta canción en esta versión original, y siempre nos agradaron más otras canciones que éstas. Otra vez: lástima.]

En octubre de 1969, el grupo que por entonces contaba con Robert Fripp, Greg Lake y otros tantos, lanzó su álbum debut que desafió lo que sonaba por entonces. Tomando distancia del blues y el rock and roll, la banda recurrió a la música clásica, el jazz y otros sonidos para construir una mezcla sin parangón, que impulsó a una nueva generación inspirada por la psicodelia y el pop barroco. Era el origen del rock progresivo.En el verano de 1969, todo parecía ir más rápido. El centellante Apolo XI que se aprestaba a realizar una hazaña fantaseada por Julio Verne casi exactamente un siglo antes, resumía el espíritu de una generación que se empeñaba en empujar los límites
